인상주의라는 명칭이 <인상, 해돋이>(1872)라는 클로드 모네의 작품에서 유래했을 만큼, 인상주의를 대표하는 작가가 바로 모네입니다. 그는 특정한 대상의 형태와 색채가 시간과 계절에 따라 달라지는 모습을 관찰해 다양한 연작을 제작했는데, (수련) 연작도 그중 하나 입니다. <수련이 있는 연못>(1917-1920)을 포함해 총
250여 점으로 이뤄진 이 연작은, 하늘과 연못, 구름과 수련이 뒤섞여 하나의 흐릿한 평면처럼 보입니다.
백내장으로 시력을 상실해 가는 과정에서 (수련> 연작을 그렸기 때문이기도 하지만, 모네는 인상주의 미술을 동해 대상을 평면적으로 그리는 평면성에 대한 탐구를 이어나갔던 작가이기도 합니다. 20세기 초의 현대미술은 인물이나 풍경을 입체적으로 그리는 대신 평면적으로 그리면서 대상을 추상화해 나가려는 시도로부터 시작되었고, 이런 이유로 모네의 수련) 연작은 현대회화, 특히 추상 미술의 출발점이라는 평가를 받고 있습니다.

Even the term "Impressionism" is derived from his work
Impression, Sunrise (1872). Monet produced a wide variety of works, typically in series, by observing changes in the forms and colors of specific subjects with the passage of time and the seasons. Among them is Water Lilies series, which includes about 250 works and The Water-Lily Pond
(1917-1920). This series shows a blurry, flat surface in which the sky, a pond, clouds, and water lilies are mixed about. The blurriness is believed to be a result of the cataracts from which Monet was suffering while producing this series. Aside from this physical reason, Monet applied the blurriness as an element in his constant exploration of flatness in painting through Impressionist art. Modern art in the early twentieth century began from an attempt to give figures and landscapes an abstract form by presenting them in a two-dimensional rather than three - dimensional manner. In this light, Monet's Water Lilies series is understood as an early work of contemporary painting, particularly abstract art.
